A:  Hi Johnnya. Thank you for your question. I recommend removing any flaky paint by lightly sanding the loose paint off or using a pressure washer on a low setting. Be sure to use a low setting so as not to damage the surface. Then you can clean the surface with the pressure washer as well to remove any dirt, grease, and chalk. As you probably know, the lumber needs to dry thoroughly (about 6-8 weeks) before painting. Priming is not required, but can be done with something like Behr Multi-Surface Stain-Blocking Primer & Sealer No. 436. I hope this information was helpful.
