A:  Hi there, Our Studiofoam products are made to keep sound from reflecting back into a room rather than keep it from transferring out. Here's an article to help explain what I mean. https://auralex.com/sound-isolation-overview/

A:  Hi Tlk, Studiofoam products like the Pyramids are not designed to stop sound transference through a wall and instead absorb sound already in the room you are in. For isolation, the only way to stop sound is to add mass into your walls. Sound is like water and fit through any crack, so the best option is to add a layer to your wall. This is sometimes difficult in rented spaces, but if possible I would look at our Sheetblok product as an option, with another layer of drywall going on top of it. https://auralex.com/sheetblok-sound-barrier/

A:  It has been my experience that once these panels are installed, we saw a significant reduction in noise transference to the rest of the building. We didn't put a meter on it or anything, but feels like at least two thirds of the sound that formerly irked the customers in the shop downstairs has been eliminated.

Q:My problem is having a gym below residential apartments. The ceiling is 20' high, there is 15" of blown in sound insulation between the ceiling and floor of the apartments. I am hoping installing these studiofoam panels on the ceiling and some side walls will eliminate the sound penetration to the apartments above. Thoughts and suggestions please. Thanks, Sam

                Answer This Question

A:  Hi Sam, Your situation presents more solutions than problems. It just depends on how much time you want to dedicate to the issue. Sure, these Auralex panels are great for your space and will work fine all alone, but I sense potential for so much more. You see, most of us don't have 20' of room to work with, so consider yourself blessed with the opportunity to really have some fun with it. Remember that acoustically, dead air is the best insulator. Creating empty space goes farther than any foam or ceramic could by itself. Considering this, I would create a simple drop-ceiling that is a few inches smaller than the ceiling area above. Then affix the Auralex panels to the underneath of the new ceiling, or, depending on your budget, to both sides of the new ceiling, or all three sides, counting the old ceiling. As long as your workout routine doesn't involve juggling three running chainsaws, the upstairs neighbors won't hear a thing.

A:  Thank you for choosing Auralex Acoustics! When it comes to sound travelling from one space to another, you’re really looking at a sound isolation issue. Unfortunately, that means in order to fix something like that, it involves a bit of a construction project. When you apply treatment to an existing space, it improves the acoustics in the space itself. When there is sound travelling from one space to another, it usually is because of how that space is constructed. I have included links to our construction/isolation products on our website: https://www.auralex.com/products/construction/ https://www.auralex.com/isolation/ If you have any other questions, please feel free to call us at 317-842-2600, or email help@auralex.com!

                    Answer This Question

A:  Hello and thank you for choosing Auralex Acoustics! So when it comes to sound travelling into another space, you're really looking at a sound isolation issue. When there is sound travelling from one space to another, it usually is because of how that space is constructed. I have included links to our construction/isolation products and an educational resource regarding a sound isolation project: https://www.auralex.com/products/construction/ https://www.auralex.com/isolation/ I have attached a link to our construction products. The products we are currently carrying, can be used to construct your own window plug, which we sometimes suggest in a situation similar to this. There you can find quick guides and spec sheets for further details regarding using Mineral Fiber Insulation, SheetBlok Sound Barrier, Platfoam and PlatSheet, and StopGap Sealant. These should hopefully be materials and guides to get you started in constructing your own window plug with the use of our products.
