Q:How many clips would I need to install 15 feet of fabric and would I need clips for top and bottom?

    Answer This Question

A:  Anchor spacing is determined using a variety of information including panel size (span between anchors), substrate (timber or concrete) and historic wind speed for your location. Please use the relevant product approval for your area to determine the anchor spacing needed for your specific conditions. Product approvals can be found on www.hurricanefabric.com under the "resources" drop down menu, then selecting product approvals. Coastal areas typically have pressures in the 50 psf range. Smaller opening similarly see 40 psf zones. Very large openings typically see pressures in the 30 psf zone.

Q:Do the clips stay on the house?

      Answer This Question

A:  Do you mean when you are not covering your windows in the event of a hurricane? Then I would say no. Store the clips with the nylon mesh but put the bolts back in the housing . Don’t tighten the bolts or you will have trouble loosening them the next time you need to put up your window coverings.

A:  Work very well with the hurricane fabric i purchased.

A:  No, the clips are bolted to the fabric and come down when you remove the panels. The only things that stay on the house are the screw anchors and the anchor bolts

A:  It will depend on several things. If you are attaching side to side in a wood substrate, you will use 11 Clips each side. If you are attaching to a masonry structure, you will use 7 each side.

Q:with my french doors I need the 80"x88" covering. Do you know how many of the proper anchors I need for Miami Dade Code?

            Answer This Question

A:  The recommended minimum spacing is 12" apart. My installation was in Mexico and I don't know Miami Dade Code but I would expect that at that spacing it meets those requirements. And, by the way, it is stamped on the material that it meets that code for Category 5 hurricanes. Based on that information I would use 7 anchors on each long side and 5 or 6 across the top for a total of 19 or 20 anchors.

A:  Every 6 inches put a clip right and left, and on the horizontal every 12 inches. On a patio door make sure you can escape by having access to the wing nuts. You don't want to be locked in a emergency. Do not mount the fabric where it would come in direct contact with the glass, a gap is needed. Not sure about the Miami Dade code but think you'll be ok. The manufacture has more details. You'll have to do a flush mount on the floor part.

A:  To be safe I always space them around 9 inches plus 1 diagonally in the 2 corners. That would be around 30 pieces.

A:  Specs online will give that exact information. ALWAYS refer to specs for the installation of anything . . . large or small . . . if you want the item to be installed per manufacturer's guidelines. Never guess. https://images.homedepot-static.com/catalog/pdfImages/42/425cf88b-a1a4-4868-b056-2bca49cd1f00.pdf

A:  Anchor on each side, your span will be <9'. Miami Dade code is 8" on center for wood substrate and 10" on center for concrete. Place 3 or 4 supplemental anchors on top to prevent sagging or billowing.

Q:Can you install Astro Guard fabric on the interior as I live in a condo highrise and dont have the option to install on the exterior

                  Answer This Question

A:  You could install them inside, but you won't benefit from the Astroguard protecting your windows as they will be exposed. Also the anchors will be an aesthetic hindrance on your inside walls. But the Astroguard should protect the contents of your condo from the wind.

A:  This is not the way the product is supposed to be installed and would present many problems. Maybe contact the company to see what they say. Good luck,

A:  I don’t think it will be as effective as mounted on the outside. These are great when used on the outside as mine have been thru 3 hurricanes with no problems. They are easy to put up and take down and fold for easy storage.

A:  I think you mean on a balcony or a deep recessed window? The answer to your question is YES. Use the installation hole on the short flat size. You will also need panel mate hardware with wingnuts or sidewalk bolts with leaded anchors. Side walk bolts will look better because they are recessed. You may have to go to someone who sells hurricane hardware for this, HD is limited. Make sure you have a good surface to install this, i like to use a small amount of liquid nails fuze it caulk for a sturdier install. I also use two different size bits. My jobs come out strong and excellent but takes time to do it right..............Alf

A:  If HD offers this size, that is what you get. You need a different supplier, think code says not to do wider than 18 feet, you need to check into this. Clips install about every 6" on vertical and horizontal maybe every 12". Their are code guidelines that address your installation.

A:  I don't believe you can order a customized size. I ordered what was large enough to cover my windows and then cut the fabric to the proper size. I noticed that the edges appeared fused so I used a soldering iron along the edges (this was NOT something that was in the instructions). Another option would be to sew a seam to join 2 smaller pieces to make the size you need and I did find Astroguard information on the web that explained their approved seam technique.

A:  To my knowledge, the only option at retailers like Home Depot is to buy a size larger than needed and cut it. It might be better than nothing to get two or more smaller ones and overlap them. The manufacturer's website looks to have the ability to supply other sizes.
