It is 100% bamboo and is coated with high-quality polyurethane and has sturdy rubber feet. To minimize the chance of mildew and mold I would wipe it down weekly with a clean towel.

A:  Good question! It may surprise you but the surface is actually not slippery. The polyurethane coating creates a sticky (but not icky) surface. There is a non-skid latex backing on the bottom of the mat which helps keep it in place too.
