A:  Yes. No difference hot or cold.

A:  Yes , both are the same, clockwise to shut off and ccw to open.

A:  They are identical on mine. Right turn to shut off, left to open. The actual valve body accepts this on the hot and cold side, so they will work on either side!

A:  Yes, the item will work for both hot and cold.

A:  If it is leaking in or through the wall it may or may not be this part. Typically when this part fails, it leaks through the faucet (bad seat washer) or through the stem (packing is needing adjustments or replaced). Both the seat washer and packing may be replaced If the stem or seat are in good condition for much less. If it came through the wall, this part is not sealed after installation AND is leaking, or most likely it is either the drain, the shower diverter, or leaking from a broken pipe or other source.

A:  You need a 1" and 3/4 inch open end wrench, or an adjustable wrench. You just pull the old one the put the new one it. CAUTION: if you have a seized seat, use a slide hammer with the removal process. Any damage to the valve body will render this part useless. Also make sure the valve is closed to prevent potential binding during installation. Once it is installed you will need to seal around it before replacing the chrome, plumbers putty or I used silicone. These come with packing that may need adjustments. After the water is back on, use the 3/4" wrench to tighten the smaller of the two nuts. This will compress the packing so it will not drip through the stem during use. No need to overtighten, just snug until it quits leaking. Too tight will make it difficult to turn the handles.
