Q:I'm looking for an anti-skid product to overcoat the vinyl-clad wooden deck around my above-ground pool. The vinyl is peeling, so I was planning to remove as much of the vinyl as possible, then sand it and cover it with a non-skid product. So it would have to adhere to both vinyl and wood. My experience with combination primer/paint products has not been great - they adhere decently to perfect surfaces, but less perfect surfaces require good primers to stick. Any thoughts? Can you think of a better solution? For example marine or epoxy paints? Thanks!

A:  The Anvil Gator Grip we purchased 3 years ago does not state it can be used on vinyl, however Anvil has changed their Gator Grip formula as our Gator Grip did not contain the Bonding Primer we had to purchase this separately and apply the primer first then apply the Gator Grip. I see Anvil now offers a product called Deck A New and I believe I read this product can be used on composite decking. You can also go to Anvil website and either email them or call them to find out for sure, then order or buy at Home Depot. Hope this helps, Good Luck!!

            Answer This Question

A:  I am not sure what you are applying this product to in order to answer your question. We applied Gator Grip to our wood deck 3 years ago. We cleaned deck using pressure washer allowed to dry for many days then applied 2 coats primer and then 2 coats Gator Grip. You can find the preparation methods at http://www.anvilpaints.com/store/9200-GATORGRIP-TEXTURED-ACRYLIC-FLOOR-COATING-DOVER-GREY/B41A5F1D-93C5-4168-9B59-5C568955CFFD?category=Decorative%20Concrete%20Stains%20&%20Sealers for this product. If you are still unsure email or call Anvil directly, you can find their contact info in link listed above. There customer service was very helpful for us. Good Luck!

A:  I used a Behr 10 year paint from Home Depot on my deck. I only waited about 8 months for the wood to cure, maybe too early when I painted it. It is Gray and I have sanded and pressure washed a lot of the paint off. Wherever there is pant I have Black Mold growing. Do I have to sand it all down to redo it with Gator Grip? The deck has now been there for 2 years and is a real eye sore!!!

A:  Yes, however Anvil now offers a new product called Deck a New specifically for wood decks. we used Gator Grip 3 years ago on our wood deck the Gator Grip formula 3 years ago was a little different then as we had to buy and apply the bonding primer separately, it was not already in the Gator Grip Coating.

A:  Yes, at least the Anvil Gator Grip we purchased 3 years ago to do our wood deck could, I spoke with Anvil directly then ordered from Home Depot. I see Anvil now has a new product called Deck a New specifically for wood decks though. We sprayed the Gator Grip on our wood deck after we primed the deck with primer. This specific product you are asking about states it contains the bonding primer so this Gator Grip formula is different from the one we purchased 3 years ago. Anyway back to us spraying our wood deck, I wouldn't recommend spraying, ours didn't hold up well, it cracked and flaked in a lot of places and we applied 2 coats. Our deck is in full sun and also surrounds our pool so this could have contributed to cracking and flaking. Our deck was in horrible horrible condition, see pics below. We still had a 5 gal container left and we just this week redone our deck only we used a cheap paint brush to cut in and get in between wood boards (this stuff will ruin it so go cheap and pitch it when finished) and a roller. It seems to go on thicker with a roller and we HOPE it holds up better the second time around. Good luck!
