Q:what is the diameter of the fittings and how many splines on the red and blue pieces? These are metal, not ceramic, correct? Colors are clearly hot and cold but pictures make them look like ceramic or plastic.

Q:My stem extension that is still in the stem is stuck really really bad and I can’t get it out even with the tool. It is now totally stripped and won’t come out no matter what I do. Any suggestions???? Help.

A: I went and bought the special tool as well thinking it would be a cinch to take out. Instead, I stripped completely the stem extension with nothing else to grab onto. I used a screw driver and hammer to bust the stem extension into many pieces and using a needle nose plier to fish them out. This is the most difficult repair I've done as an amateur.

A: Hello Terry and thank you for your interest in Moen products. Moen’s Cartridge Retainer Removal Tool for 2-Handle Faucet is used to remove the nut that holds the cartridge inside the valve body. The nut has to be removed before you can remove the stem and cartridge together. Moen’s Consumer Services department is available to provide product/technical/repair assistance and we would be delighted to work with you to find a satisfactory resolution. Please feel free to call us at 800-289-6636; our current business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am - 7:00 pm (Eastern Time).

A: You can use Moen 14272 Cartridge Retainer Removal, or a needle-nose plier to unscrew the stem by turning with the plier nose (the plier nose act like the 14272). But if the old stem is worn out and soften, it is better to use the Moen tool.

A: If your just replacing the stem , all you do is remove the screw. If your removing the cartridge it's a little more involved. You have to remove the plastic cartridge nut. You can use needle nose pliers or I bought the removal tool. It only cost a couple dollars and it made it a lot easier to remove. The cartridge itself could be a problem if it,s the original and been in there a long time. I found a few "how to" videos on you tube that showed how to remove stuck cartridges.
