Answer This Question

A:  Air compressors or hand pumps can be used. Use calibrated gauges and proper hoses to monitor pressure, inflate, and deflate the plug from outside of danger zone.

A:  That silver cap that is on the valve also doubles as a valve core tightening tool. If this solution does not work, please contact technical@oatey.com

Q:Could this be used to drop down a cleanout to stop backflow from the sewer, or would I not be able to retrieve it?

A:  Works very well as a sewer plug. That's actually what I use mine for. You will need the air hose extension that you can purchase separately. You will probably also need to remove the safety ring and add a length of wire as the chain is very short. Rebar tie wire works for me. No worries about retrieval.

      by|Apr 29, 2021

A:  Yes it could. The max back pressure this plug will handle is 13psi or 30ft of water head. The plug comes with a chain with a ring that will prevent it from entering beyond the ring.

      by|Dec 14, 2023

A:  Yes, it will fit down into the cleanout, then pump up with the Cherne 3 ft. Rubber Test Plug Extension Hose (Model #274038). You can use a bicycle pump. The large ring will prevent the plug from being lost down the pipe. When done, deflate the plug from end of hose, keeping your hands away so they aren't severed off.

Q:How large is the ring, that it’s supposed to prevent from falling down the sewer?

        Answer This Question

A:  The inside diameter of the ring is 4-1/16". If I remember correctly it would fit inside the Tee but too big to fit down the pipe. Be sure to get the extension hose (Cherne 3" p/n: 274038). That way you can release the pressure on the test ball and keep your hand.

        by|Jul 25, 2020

A:  RING IS 4 AND 3/8 INCH DIAMETER

          by|Jul 25, 2020

A:  The ring is 4.25" in diameter. Yes it stops the plug from entering the sewer.

          by|Jul 24, 2020

A:  large enough to not go down a 4" pipe, I wouldn't try using it on a larger than 4" pipe.

                Answer This Question

A:  When they say 13PSI they mean gauge pressure not absolute pressure. Gauge pressure is relative to the ambient pressure so at sea level the ambient is 14.7psi(a) and so +13 is 27.7 psi(a)

Q:What kind of hoses and fittings are needed to inflate this? Are they included or extra purchase? What is the length of any included hose, and what fitting does the hose use? I see schrader air valves (used on bicycle tire pumps) mentioned somewhere but with no detail.

A:  This uses a Schrader Valve & can be used with most traditional bike tire pumps.

A:  Standard bicycle tire pump fitting

A:  After buying one of these at the local HD I can answer my own question. No hoses are included, (just like the picture shows). If you use a bicycle air pump with a Schrader fitting to inflate, and the adapter at the end of the hose is at a 90-degree angle (like most are) you will not be able to inflate with the ball plug inside a 3 in pipe, because there won't be enough clearance with the 90-degree adapter. So you will need an air hose to extend, one made by CHERNE for about 11 dollars is available from HD, search for "CHERNE 36 in. Test Plug Hose, Store SKU # 711391" Alternatively look at the CHERNE 3 in. H Test Ball Plug, for 64.99, it comes with an integrated hose, https://www.homedepot.com/p/CHERNE-3-in-H-Test-Ball-Plug-271039/100167508
