Q:How high does the Bat House have to be off the ground? What are the optimal hanging conditions?

    Answer This Question

A:  Bat houses should be mounted on a wooden pole or the side of a wood-sided or brick structure, no aluminum/vinyl siding, at least 12 to 15 feet high. There should be plenty of direct sunlight and they should be out of direct weather. Due to housing their young, the bat houses need to be weatherproofed. Every seam needs to be caulked and certain colors of weather resistant paint should be used, depending on the area of the country they are to be located. A good place to check for specifics is Bat International Conservation. This organization has a lot of important information on the hows, whys, and wheres for bat houses.

A:  For better information on your question, check with Bat International Conservation. You should find all the answers. From personal experience, my bats in the attic didn't leave until my cat started chasing them. Some went out the way they came in, others he brought downstairs to show me (still alive).

A:  They won't leave your home but if conditions get too crowded the overflow will move on to other accommodations. Good luck!

          Answer This Question

A:  I don't know how many would fit in that house but I will tell you what I do know. A woodpecker made a hole at the top of a dead queen palm in my yard. I waited for them to leave the nest before bringing down the palm. What surprised me was when the palm came down over ten bats came flying out of the hole !
