A: I answered this question previously and realized the answer I gave then was incorrect. Since the stringer is cut to allow for a standard 7" rise and 11" tread, it does not sit at a 45 degree angle. However, the bottom edge is cut to rest perfectly on a flat level surface and the top edge is cut to rest on a flat vertical surface.

Q:My deck is 28 inches from the ground. Will a 3 step stringer work?

Answer This Question
A: Since the stringer is cut for a 6.5" rise, a three step stringer will work for your deck but the last step up will be higher that the other steps. You can mitigate the difference slightly by using a tread material that is thicker than your decking material. Be aware that the first step of the stringer is cut short at 5.5" to allow for a 1" thick tread material while still maintaining an even 6.5" rise.

A: Dear Valued Home Depot Customer, we have reached out to the manufacturer and their response is. "No. You will want to use a 4 step since it sits 26" from the ground to the top of stair riser. This measurement is before adding your steps, which will increase the overall height by 1-1 1/2" depending on your choice of material used for the steps.

Q:what is the final height this stringer will bring me to

Answer This Question
A: Since these questions appear to apply to multiple stringers with different steps, this answer is designed can be used to calculate the height of any of the stringers.
The final height will depend on the number of steps in the stringer you are purchasing. To determine that height add 5.5" for the first step to the thickness of your tread material. Then add this amount to 6.5" times your number of steps minus one step.
As an example, if you have a 4 step stringer and are using the standard 1" thick tread material this stringer was designed for then you have 5.5" + 1" + 6.5" × (4 - 1) = 24"
This gives you the height off the ground at the surface of the final step.

A: Each step is nearly one foot, so a 4-step stringer would be nearly 4-feet tall.

Answer This Question
A: The height is 47.71".
by|Oct 18, 2018
A: It is 5.5" for the first step plus 6
5" times the number of steps in your stringer minus 1.
For example, if you have a 4 step stringer, this stringer's height without treads would be 5.5" + 6.5" × (4 - 1) = 23"
This gives you the height off the ground at the surface of the final step without the treads.
