Q:Will the Traeger ModiFire Sear Grate fit on my PitBoss grill

Answer This Question

A:  Hi, and thanks for your interest in the Traeger Modifire Sear Grate. Modifire accessories are specifically designed to fit perfectly on Traeger Modifire grill grates, such as those that are currently exclusive to the newly designed Traeger Timberlines and Ironwoods. Although they can be used on other grills as long as they are big enough to hold the 18.25” x 11.5” size, they will not fit as securely as they would on the Traegers that they are designed for and may need to be rotated 90 degrees to sit perpendicular to the grill grates.

Hello, and thanks for your review of the ModiFIRE Sear Grate. While you might find similar grates elsewhere, the ModiFIRE Sear Grate is not your basic searing tool. Like all ModiFIRE accessories, this grate is specifically designed to lock into place on ModiFIRE compatible grills, such as the newly designed versions of the Timberline and Ironwood models. Although they can still be used with other grills (by adjusting their position 90 degrees), they won’t latch in position, but rather rest on the grates like any other comparable product. But as far as functionality is concerned, these may be different than what you’re used to. With its anodized aluminum construction, setting the grill to 475 degrees will get the grate very hot, very fast, producing the perfect sear marks on steaks, pork chops, chicken or anything else that you want to add a professional quality texture to. Buyer beware
I purchased this product a week ago to enhance the sear my steaks. I deep cleaned my smoker before using it to avoid any issues. I lightly oiled the new grate as per the instructions. I also placed the grate on the left side of my ironwood starting at the beginning of my cook also as per the instructions. I then got the internal temp of the tomahawk to 115 degrees, removed it from the traeger and increased the heat to 500 degrees. Once the temp was reached, I placed the tomahawk on the sear grate and within 4 minutes I got an “high temp error” and the traeger went into cool down mode then shut itself off. I ended up finishing the steak in a cast iron pan on the stove top. Hopefully this contraption didn’t ruin my smoker.

Hi, and thanks for the review of the ModiFIRE Sear Grate. We are sorry to hear that you had an error when using the grate, but at least it appears to be a quick fix. Even though it sounds like you set up the grate correctly on the left side, and only lightly oiled it before putting it in, the highest temperature that the grill should be set to when using the grate is 475 degrees. Setting it higher than this can result in the exact type of error that occurred, regardless of the grate’s position inside the grill. For more information, search “ModiFIRE Sear Grate” on Traeger.com, then click the SUPPORT link above the results. There you will find all details you’ll ever need on using the grate, although the basics will also be on the guide that came with it as well.
      Great tool ….but
Issue with searing on a smoker? You better clean it to get the fat dripping off your grill before cranking to 475. Fat fires and billowing smoke will happen.

Hi, and thanks for your recommendations regarding the ModiFIRE Sear Grate. Your point is well taken and certainly on the mark. Whether it is a gas grill, charcoal BBQ or Traeger smoker, maintenance is key, not only for proper performance, but safety too. Even without using the sear grate, it is always important to clean off excess grease to avoid flareups. But when kept properly maintained, the grill should perform without issue, even at temperatures of up to 500 degrees for grilling, as well as smoking. For tips on cleaning your smoker, search “cleaning your grill” on Traeger.com then click the Support link above the results to find an article with steps for keeping your grill running efficiently and safely. You can also call Customer Service at 1-800-TRAEGER if you have questions on this, or any other topic relating to your grill.
