      • Some Quality Problems and a Terrible Manual
      • March 12, 2013

I was very excited to receive my new Steel City table saw with the T-Square Fence and granite top. The saw arrived well crated in a metal frame and complete. It was easy enough to assemble if one is mechanically inclined (which I imagine most purchasers would be), but, really, they should not bother including the instruction manual. It was printed off the laser printer, clipped together, and clearly written by someone who doesn't speak much English. Frequently tells you, in pidgeon English, what to do without telling you how to do it. The product is built like a tank and rolls well with the built-in wheels, which is vastly superior to buying a separate rolling base. The included blade is junk, as is often the case with power saws. Again, I don't know why they bother. Unfortunately, the mating ends of the front fence rail were not cut square or to the proper length, so the holes did not align with bar it rides on. Took a bit of work with the grinder to get them set. Also, the fence itself is just slightly off square in a way that cannot be adjusted, so I have to be extra careful in measuring precisely against the table. These are dissapointing quality issues in a machine that costs almost $1,000. Finally, the included measuring tape on the fence rail was poorly glued on and in any case was not useful if you add a supplemental rail to the fence. Ran 8/4 cherry through it this weekend and it bogged down a bit. Works but you have to go very slowly. My old Bosch job site saw would have handled it fine, despite a lower power rating. This problem might be improved by upgrading the blade. If so, I will update this post. All in all, I was a bit dissapointed and would caution any buyer to spring for a fancier fence system.
