OK. A little background on what I do. I am not just a DIY'er. I am a construction professional by trade and I do this for a living. It supports my family and I and is not just a hobby. Part of my job involves building decks. We use 4x6 and 6x6 beams and occasionally for the biggest ones 8x beams. Some of these are posts and some are custom hand rails. Without this saw, these would have to be cut with a chain saw and then planed and sanded until they take a smooth shape. With this saw I am now able to slice right trough the 4x6 timber and able to do 22.5 degree miter cuts. The saw is heavy but you have to remember, you are holding 3.75 horsepower in your hands. It is like a table saw in your hand, not just a typical "just enough" circular saw. It has a heavy plate with a good support while ripping. Amazingly, it weighs about 2-3 pounds more than the cheap 7 1/4 saws that do not have aluminum or magnesium on them. The miter angle locks in at 45 degrees, but with a push of a button, it can go to 51 degrees. The people that have come to watch me work my magic refer to the saw as "Son of Hercules". It is strong, powerful and does not like being connected to a 16 gauge 100 foot cord. A 12 gauge is better as it allows the saw to run and full potential with no harm to the brushes in the motor. Can you imagine making your own miter box and slicing through crown molding for the perfect angles? A 7 1/4 saw could never do that. Yes I have 12" compound miter saws but do I carry them everywhere I go? Would I carry it for one small job? No. This saw and a Miter box does it all. There are a couple of things I wished Skilsaw had improved, though: First, the forward handle is skinny and not as comfortable as I expected, and the ~3/16" gap between the gearbox and the base when the saw is set to full depth could be eliminated. Some people have complained about the Diablo blade included with this saw. Many users mention blade wobble. I was able to almost completely avoid this problem during long rips by first making a small cut with a 7-1/4" saw. Then I would switch over to this saw, enter the cut, stop just before the end of the cut I made with the 7-1/4" saw, plunge in to full depth, and then proceed to finish the cut. This helped reduce the blade wobble to about 1/32" per side and allowed us to make perfectly straight cuts. All I can say is COOL SAW!
