I've been on the fence for quite a while about cordless string trimmers. I have a 1/2 acre yard, and didn't really think I'd ever switch over from gas. I waited a few generations of cordless tools, and finally decided to give this one a try. I'm glad I did! Assembly should take less than 5 minutes to get you started. I was VERY surprised at the power it offered, and didn't feel like I was being limited by the trimmer's power at any point during normal yardwork tasks. This is a well thought out trimmer, with lots of improvements over the design of the previous generation Ryobi trimmers, as well as some of the competitors. The brushless motor is located at the opposite end from the trimmer head, unlike most other 18V string trimmers. This keeps it up away from wet grass and debris that can cause foreign object damage and prematurely kill the tool. Having the motor in the far end means there's a driveshaft running the length of the trimmer body, which takes more power. However, this means the whole system has more angular momentum, which helps keep it from bogging down when cutting through a particularly dense patch of grass or weeds. The trimmer shaft does separate in the middle, with a spline coupler connecting the interior rotating driveshafts. (Pure speculation on my part - it seems like there's a possibility Ryobi could come out with more attachments that use the brushless trimmer base for power. Although it doesn't look to be compatible with the Expand-It system Ryobi already has on the market, so maybe that's a completely off-base conjecture.) The trimmer is much better balanced than other previous Ryobi trimmers as well. I went to the store and held the older 18V model, and it felt front heavy. I tried the 40V model, and it felt back heavy due to the giant battery. I think this one's just about perfectly balanced about the forward handle, and weighs in at just 9 pounds. The trimmer head holds 10' of solid or twisted 0.065" diameter line, or twisted 0.08" diameter line. That's not a ton of line, but it's really easy to load, and comes with a speed winder for extra convenience. Whenever the line needs replacing, just insert the new strand all the way through the head, and pull until it's centered. Then wind it up - the whole process takes about 30-45 seconds. After charging up the included 4Ah battery, I cut grass in my yard with the trimmer running on high for 23 minutes before I ran out of charge. That wasn't a continuous run time because I walked from place to place occasionally without it running, but I felt it was a good representation of normal use. So if you normally take more time than 20-25 minutes, you'll definitely want spare One+ batteries in addition to the one that comes with this kit. As far as power goes, I was very impressed with the tool. I expected to need to go slower than I normally do with my gas string trimmer, but I never felt like I had to. I was using the 13" diameter setting, with the trimmer on high - I'd expect to feel less power on the 11" diameter setting at low speed though. The only time I think I'll really have to break out my 15" diameter gas powered trimmer now would be for clearing a large overgrown area. This brushless cordless trimmer should be able to handle all of my normal lawn maintenance tasks, which really surprised me.
