I was pleasantly surprised by this wet saw. Having only used tile saws with overhead motors before, I noticed a few advantages of a tabletop model right off the bat. First, it’s smaller, lighter and easier to transport and store. Second, it doesn’t require a water pump to operate – the blade picks up the water from the reservoir below instead of it being pumped up to the overhead blade. Having been completely set up to start a job before only to discover that the pump had gone bad, this is probably the largest advantage I see to using a tabletop saw over one with an overhead motor. There are a couple drawbacks as well – first, because you feed the tile through instead of bringing the blade down onto it, it makes it harder to be precise. With an overhead model, you can physically pull the blade down to the tile and see that it’s lining up with your mark before you start cutting. With this saw, you can line the mark up initially with the edge of the blade, but after that, you’re relying on a steady hand and the rip guide to ensure you’re cutting where you want because the blade guard and the spray pretty well obscure your view once it’s running. Another potential drawback is that to ensure clean cuts on the finished side of the tile with this saw, you really need to cut the tile face down. With an overhead model you can cut the tile face up since the blade will make contact with the top of the tile first, creating a clean cut on the face and confining any chipping that occurs to the back of the tile. Since the blade of this saw makes contact first from underneath, it greatly increases the chances of chipping the front of your tile if you try to cut it face up. I cut several tiles both ways and 2 out of 3 tiles I cut face up had small chips or excess pieces that needed to be snipped. Cutting the tiles face down eliminated the problem completely, however, for large/complicated projects, this will definitely make marking your tile more difficult. Other observations – this saw makes good clean cuts, and the way they built in the ability to cut 22.5 and 45 degree angled edges is pretty ingenious. The rip guard is a little cumbersome and you have to be very careful when locking it in place that both sides are lined up on the same number, but overall, it does a good job ensuring you get consistent cuts. This saw does put out quite a bit of spray, so expect a wet shirt and for this to be an outdoor-only item. My only real complaint is that the metal piece the blade secures to is a bit flimsy. Mine was a little bent to start with, making it out of line with the blade itself and snagging 2 or 3 tiles before I realized the problem. I was able to easily bend it back in line with the blade, but that also means it’s likely to bend back out of alignment eventually. Other than that, this is a great little saw. While it’s not professional grade, it’s perfect for most homeowners. It makes good cuts, doesn’t require the use of a pump and is small enough that it won’t take up too much room in the garage in between projects.
