      • Excellent blower - needs a little love at first

Contrary to other reviews here, I've had a very good experience with this blower. I've had it for a few months now and use it every weekend. At first it would stall at full throttle, required very careful choke application, etc. in fact, it could not be throttled at will. It had to be worked up to 3/4 throttle very carefully. But slowly, it learned new tricks, and now starts easily, can be de-choked right away, keeps running at full throttle just fine, and can be throttled up and down at will. I have also used a troy-bilt 4-cycle blower and there was a tag attached to it that specifically explained that due to internal friction when the engine was new, it would take 3-5 hours of use before it would start easily, run at full throttle, etc. That was true, as it took a while to learn good behavior. My 74 year old mom now has that one and loves it. So I think that the real failure here is that Ryobi simply doesn't warn the user that the engine's behavior will be a little rocky at first as Troy-Bilt does. I think 4-cycle engines have these break-in issues because of the extra drag from the valve train (not present with 2-cycle engines) coupled with the tightness of the rings etc. in a new engine. Oh, and it seems that at first, the assembly grease is in the oil. With both blowers and my edger (Ryobi 4-cycle), the first time I changed the oil (with very few hours on them), there was something thick and opaque in the oil, so I also think that the assembly grease may cause a little more drag on the engine at first. So in summary, with small 4-cycle engines, you have to put up with some crankiness at first in trade for a lifetime free of mixing fuel and oil and stinking every time you use it. Not to mention emissions and fuel efficiency. Well worth it. Nice blower.
