The thick wooden handle appears to be ash wood. That wood made sturdy baseball bats for many years. It will last a long time. The steel handle & shovel are made of thick steel riveted onto the ash shaft. The rivets are heavy duty as well. The real joy was in use. It goes down 16". The wife placed the plant in the exact spot for her. Place the shovel on all 4 sides of the plant to mark the location. Remove the plant & repeat the 4 sides with foot & weight pressure on the shovel then pry out the dirt plug. There will be some more light digging (to appease the wife) but there will be a perfect hole for her new plant. This job use to take 30 mins with a standard shovel. Now it takes 10 mins because of the depth of the blade.
