Q:The primer has turned clear should I dospose of it?

Answer This Question

A:  You will have to look at the date code on the bottom of the can. The first two numbers are the year. It is good for 3 years. The color of the product does not affect the performance of it.

A:  Yes, it has separated and is probably too old to use. Mike

Q:What happens if I use primer on pvc threads
    by|Jul 25, 2023

    Answer This Question

A:  Primer would only be used on smooth pipe fittings. Primer softens the PVC to help cement bond better. Primer could affect the rigidity of the threads and should not be used on them.

      Answer This Question

A:  Yes, as long as you use a spray paint intended for plastic. I always paint exposed pvc otherwise it becomes brittle from sunlight.

Q:does anyone else have a problem with the lid not completely sealing and leaking?

          Answer This Question

A:  ALWAYS! Probably because the primer is so thin it evaporates quickly. I always tighten the cap with a pair of channellocks.

A:  Yes - That has happened to me in the past as well.

          by|Jul 1, 2020

A:  When opening the can initially, you want to be careful not to over-grab (if using pliers) because this can slightly oblong the lid and affect the seal which can lead to a leaking can. If using pliers or channel locks you need to just grab the teeth of the lid just enough to be able to turn and loosen. These lids are on tight from the factory so nothing spills during shipment.

A:  you are the only one i have heard of with this problem im not sure how has happened but when you first open a can of primer and use pliers to help open it puts a small dent in the lid -???? you can wrap teflon tape on the threads then put on the lid snug this should stop leaks hope this helps

            by|Nov 28, 2019

A:  Yes. My experience with PVC primers has been that they can leak out of the can if the can is not in the upright position.

              Oatey Purple Primer
I'm a 59 year old plumber son of actively working 88 year old Plumber in Franklin TN. The last couple of years we've noticed 9 out of every 10 can of primer we buy the dauber falls apart half way through the can, We lay 1000's of 2" PVC pipe yearly and the quality of these daubers is bad. I mentioned it yesterday in a Facebook Septic Installer's Group and it seems to be a nationwide problem, the suppler laughs at us when we mention this issue?

Oatey Primer is easy to use and helps ensure leak free pipe connections. Oatey purple primer colors the pipe so you know the you have 100% coverage. It makes the pipe more sticky the the cement alone, ensuring a better welding. It says it's for cpvc and pvc but I also use it on ABS (black drain pipe) and it works great. Just coat the pipe with the primer and then the cement and then put the connections together and twist 1/4 turn to mix the cement with the pipe. This will give you a solid connection.

Works real well. Was actually surprised that as thin as it is it works well. It doesn't leave the mess that the thicker PVC. When used in combination with the thick PVC glue it is impossible to take apart. I used it for low voltage camera data wires underground between house and garage and havent had any problems. Also it isn't as messy as most PVC glues and primers.

Oatey purple primer works as it should, that is to clean and soften the pvc pipe and fittings so the cement makes the proper bond without leaks. That is of course that the proper steps are followed. I have been using Oatey pvc purple primer and pvc cement for decades and have always been satisfied with the results so I would definitely recommend this product.

We used this OATEY PVC AND CPVC PURPOSE PRIMER (which comes in an 8 ounce size, with a built-in brush to use as an applicator) to help remove some dirt and oil from some PVC piping and prepare the pipes for applying the PVC glue to the pipes which we were installing for both a pump we installed and piping for our orchid house; this product worked well and was easy to apply The product worked well and the purple color of the solution helped to identify where we needed to apply the solvent, which is very helpful

My development had a new reclaimed water system installed and I used this product to install a main water line from the new meter up into my yard where my sprinkler system valve box was located. My old sprinkler system valves were over 20 years old and in very poor shape so I decided to replace all the valves with new ones. I used this product on every connection to insure a good secure connection The old potable water system water pressure was around 40 lbs of pressure...the new reclaimed water line pressure was 60-65 lbs. so it was very important to have all the connections secure. I was very pleased when my new system was inspected the inspector said it was one of the nicest installations he had seen....he turned on the water and I did not have a single or issue at all!

I found a dirty piece of PVC pipe and applied the primer. The dirt was removed with very little effort revealing a clean pipe ready for cement. The included brush was the right size to get into 1/2" fittings as well as coating 4" pipe or larger with little effort. I found the cap to tight to remove by hand and required channel lock pliers to open the can. The purple color makes it easy to see the area that has been primed. I have had customers that do not like this and would prefer a clear or white cleaner. The purple also stains anything that it contacts and is best used with gloves and protection from drips.

Whether you are doing a plumbing repair or new work the only way to insure a good glue contact and seal for leaks is with a good primer. This primer is not the best looking when a job is done but just a quick glance you know it was done right the purple is a stain so inspectors know you used it to make the proper glue joint. Easy screw off cap has built in brush to clean both pieces to be glued dries in seconds so you can glue right a way.
