Rather than removing beneficial minerals like old-fashioned salt softeners, the NuvoH2O system uses a citrus-based formula, called CitraCharge, to bind hard minerals. A: My NuvoH2O system is intentionally NOT hooked up to treat the water used in our outside irrigation system (sprinklers). However, we use indoor water for our houseplants, no problem.

Q:Wondering if I couldn’t just plop this cartridge into an existing 20in housing that would accommodate this size and have the product work? If not, what does the super expensive housing the whole system is sold with do that makes it different than a $50-$100 filter housing that justifies it being $600?

A: Caleb, I've personally never tried using our cartridges in a different housing. However, I would strongly recommend against it. Some housings may look similar in size or appearance, but they can be designed for different purposes or installation points. If that system were to leak with our cartridge in it, then this would not be something that we would warranty. This mismatch could cause potential problems for you, us and the third party now involved. Also, our CS would also be unable to properly assist you with questions or concerns, if you were only using a portion of our product. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. Thanks,

A: I don't know what a standard 20 filter housing is . . . . however, the Nuvo filter slips in perfectly in the Nuvo supplied housing. I've used other filters in my water system before, and this one is a lot different.

Difficult to say

This citric acid granule system is in a small cabin on well water. As such, it goes months without use, the most recent example being five months since my previous visit, the existing cartridge sitting in the filter housing water for those five months. My gauge for the system's effectiveness is the single handle kitchen faucet diverter whose tiny orifices have historically clogged severely reducing water flow volume. After the five months of soaking in its cartridge housing water, flow rate was as good as it ever was and I elected not to change the filter.

I have had my NuvoH2O water softener system for over 8 years and it performs very well. Based on my water usage, I change the cartridge about every 6 months. It is easy to do and reliable. I also change my carbon water filter at the same time and together I can really notice a difference in the taste and feel of my water. Also, have not seen any scale on faucets & appliances since I installed this system.

My water softener has only been installed about a month, so it is somewhat difficult to tell how well it will perform with eliminating lime deposits. Judging by the drinking glasses removed from the dishwasher and the glass shower doors, I think it is making a different as spotting is much, much less. Only time will tell with the lime deposits. I wish there was a way to tell when the cartridge needs replacing instead of blinding changing it every six months. Seems wasteful in households that use much less water than average. The downside is that you don't want to wait for the lime deposits to come back as that defeats the purpose of installing the softener in the first place. I wish the design included an overflow hose to make it less messy to change out a cartridge. When the unit is placed in bypass, water temporarily escapes from around the cap. The instructions warn you of this escaping water, so it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who reads the instruction.
