      • Very Noisy, Hard to Clean, Difficult to install in old work, even if you are replacing the previous version of the same product.

Maybe I was just unlucky, but I expect better from Nutone. I have a range hood and other bathroom heater fans from Nutone and they have been just great for 30 years. While the fan this one replaced was working fine, the motor bearings were starting to go and so I decided to replace it when I remodeled the bathroom. I was disappointed to discover that while this heater fan has the same external dimensions of my old Nutone heater fan, they have altered the design enough that the new fan would not fit in the old rough opening. While the vent fan for this unit fit perfectly into the old housing, it was not possible to swap out the heater unit. I had no choice but to rip out the old fan housing and then had to notch out the ceiling, alter the framing and re-route the duct work. Now I am no stranger to this sort of work. I made my living as a contractor for many years and have installed many bath fans. So none of this would have bothered me in the least if I had ended up with a quiet, reliable fan. However, from the first day, this fan has been far noisier than the one it replaced. The housing is made from a lighter gauge of sheet metal than the previous version, and the mounting arrangements for the fan and heater within the housing are much less secure than in Nutone's older products. I seriously considered returning it last summer, but shopping around, I could not find a comparable unit that I could install without making even more serious alterations to the bathroom finish and in particular, the wiring. So I added some rubber shims where I could detect things rattling, which quieted the fan down a bit, though it was still substantially louder than old Nutone heater/fan in my kid's bathroom. Let me explain that. The fan in the kid's bathroom, which is also a Nutone, is so quiet that often it is left on all day because no on realizes it is running. This one however, is so loud, that it can actually be heard from the other bathroom, as well as the rest of the house. Unfortunately, things got worse. During "Spring Cleaning" I always pull out all the vent fans including the ones in the bathrooms and the range hood to give them a good cleaning. My other Nutone fans come apart easily, and the fan blades and squirrel cages can be readily removed from the motors and run through the dishwasher for a thorough cleaning. However, just getting these fans OUT of the housing is a royal pain, and it is not possible to remove the impellers for a thorough cleaning. All you can do is vacuum the motor/impeller/heating coil assemblies, try to get a drop of oil on the motor bearings, and put the not-so-clean assemblies back into the housing. This last task is not any easier than it was to remove the fans in the first place. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this product, and I hope that Home Depot will exercise it's market clout by having a little sit down with the Nutone people and help them see the light in regard to off-shoring their manufacturing and substituting their old, reliable, quiet designs for new, shoddy ones.
