- This is absolutely the finest water heater on the market!

As an engineer, I considered all available options and types of water heaters. I had a an electric unit but I do have natural gas so every option was available to me. I selected the Marathon for the following reasons:
1- A conventional steel tank water heater whether gas or electric will only last a a few years after the anode is dissolved
2-A tankless unit unsually requires relocation of plumbing so the unit can be mounted on an outside wall complicating installation and increasing installation costs. These units also require annual maintenance much like a furnace and have a limited heat exchanger life that will require costly replacement at some point. The payback mathematics simply do not work when all of these costs are considered not to mention that the performance of these units is questionable depending on the size of the home and the number of family members. For larger homes, two should be installed.
3-Heat pump units are attractive but because these units use air to air heat exchange, they will not function well if installed in a cold area. These units also use steel tanks so the will not last any longer than a conventional unit and will likely not save anything if installed in a cold basement. The manufacturers should consider developing a incoming water heat exchanger.
4-Conventional gas, again this unit uses a steel tank and venting to the outside can be problematic for retrofit a former electric unit.
The Marathon unit is simply of the highest quality and was a breeze to install. This unit only looses 5 degrees in a 24 hour period due to the massive amount of injection molded foam insulation. I selected the 105 gallon unit so that I could fill my jaccuzzi which I could never do with my 80 gallon unit. The tank is fiber wound FRP and will never fail due to corrosion. This is truly a revolutionary product that will last beyond your lifetime and is transferable to the next owner of your home so it truely adds value to your property. I have owned three homes and replaced three water heaters but this will be the last one and I would argue that this has the best payback and efficiency over any other unit on the market. So if you want the very best, most efficient unit and never want to replace a water heater again, this is it! A few dollars more than a steel unit and much less than a tankless or heat pump unit but well worth it in any size you choose
