      • Great washer, but no machine is perfect

I've had this washer for almost 2 years. I think I've learned all its quirks, good and bad. I would actually rate this "very good" rather than excellent, but HD doesn't offer that option. There may be some tweaks to each new model year, but basically it's the same machine. I will say that the washer does get your clothes, towels, blankets, etc very clean and very well spun out -- BUT you have to do some trial and error to figure out the best cycle for each type of load. The instruction booklet is not particularly helpful in describing exactly what the water temp will really be or how energy saving each different cycle really is. For example, the "cotton/normal" setting default is warm water; however it is one of the energy saving cycles, so it only adds a tiny bit of hot water and you basically end up with what really is a cold water cycle. These are the two things that I fault the washer for: 1. If you want to wash in warm water, the machine does not mix the water; it starts out with a lot of cold water, then completely switches to hot for a minute or two, then back to cold. That's okay if you're doing towels, but for normal shirts, underwear, sheets, etc that I might like to do in lukewarm water, I do not want scalding hot water being dispensed right onto the clothes. A lot of people might not be aware of this, but our pipes are very loud so I know when it's switching to hot; I've gone to the washer and checked it and yep, scalding hot water right on my clothes. So, I wish it would just mix the two waters as it is filling the tub (like every other washer I've had); I end up just washing in cold almost all the time. 2. I think the water level selection would be more efficient if it could be manually selected, rather than claiming the machine weighs the load and then fills it accordingly. It starts out tossing and turning the load in order to "sense" it; by that time, your two sheets are totally twisted into a big ball in the center of the washer and never seem to get really swished around with the rest of the load. On the cotton/normal cycle, there is a very low amount of water. If you open the lid and add one handkerchief, it "senses" that you must have added 5 towels because it completely fills up the washer. So my opinion is that it's really not very good at determining how much water is needed; there's often not enough and sometimes way too much water is just wasted. But I've learned to work around the less functional aspects of the washer and I do appreciate several important facts: it never gets out of balance -- the self-balancing is excellent. It does have the "speed" cycle which I use quite a lot (kids are all grown so I don't have a lot of huge, dirty loads). You can interrupt the cycle to add more clothes, but, as I mentioned, the machine might then waste a lot of water. The machine is huge and you can wash a king or queen bedspread without having to cram it in and no balance issues. All in all, this is 10 times better than my last machine which was a front-loader. I use just a small amount of HE detergent and no boosters. The LG man said the machine does not use enough water to thoroughly rinse out booster products (like Oxyclean).
