All of us guys have been there. Your wife or girlfriend wants to buy "a few things" at Ikea. You go with the SUV and realize she doesn't want to buy a few things at Ikea; she wants to BUY IKEA! You fill up the inside as best you can, but the big, cumbersome, awkward items are just not going to fit inside. You contemplate spending the next hour taking the thing out of the box and putting all of the smaller parts inside as well and then decide against it! You contemplate going back inside and asking if they'll just deliver everything for you, but you're tired, the store is about to close and you convince yourself you can do it. Finally, you look at the roof rack and decide, yep, this is where you're going to put it. You get some of the string they offer and tie things down as best you can. You start driving and hear some shifting on the roof. You now stop on the middle of the highway (yikes) and confirm that although everything's in one place, your once secure knots are a little less so. You drive off again, this time with the window open and your hands on the items. Your thought is, hey, if it starts moving again you'll know right away and can pull over. All of this goes away with these ties downs! Put your items on the roof, slip the fabric over your items and under the rack. Put it through the ratcheting mechanism and crank away! You land up with a tight, TIGHT tie down that's not going anywhere. No agita. No "let me drive in the slow lane so I can pull over quickly if things start flying off"! I've used this to tie down "regular" items. For example, I haven't tried tying down motorcycles in the back of a pickup truck, so I have no idea how it's going to perform in more rugged situations. But if you're like me and you're always transporting stuff from various stores like the home depot, these tie downs will have you thinking roof rack first. About the only issue I had, since I've never used one of these, was learning how to release the lock once you get home. It's not so simple to understand at first and had to have someone show me. It takes a slight amount of hand muscle, but once you figure it out, that's all there is.
