      • Some use, but not worth it....

I recently bought kreg jig and it's been a great & useful tool. When I saw this doweling jig I hoped to bring that kind of efficiency and accuracy to dowel joints. But I was sorely disappointed...The theory looks good, but I can actually make these joints by hand better and easier. You must draw across your 2 pieces with a square (same as by hand) but unless you draw center lines down each piece as well, you will have a difficult time using their graduated scale to find the hole location...If you do, you're already halfway to doing it by hand anyway....Next I assumed that the drill bit was made slightly on the small side so the dowel would fit tightly, but I was wrong. That combined with a certain amount of "wobble" in the turret guaranteed an extra large hole that the dowel falls right out of.......Mysteriously, the kit includes some pieces called "dowel & tenon centers", but their use is NOT covered in the booklet. There seems to be one for each hole in the turret except one, and 2 duplicates...They can be used for marking centers for drilling, but all in all it is easier AND more accurate to do this work without the jig...Wish I had my $30 back. Bought it last fall and didn't get around to trying it until following summer, so can't return it.
