      • Not recommended for drilling concrete
      • April 09, 2016

I needed a hammer drill to drill ten 1/2" holes 1 1/2" deep into a concrete slab. After looking at Home Depot's array of hammer drill options, I purchased the Dewalt DC725. It was on sale and I have had good luck with Dewalt tools in the past. It comes with two Nicad batteries. I was impressed with the power of the drill, however, I was disappointed with the short length of time the batteries held their charge under the stress of maximum power to drive a 1/2" carbide bit (new) into concrete. Both batteries failed to hold a charge longer than ten minutes after multiple recharges. I was only able to complete three of the ten holes over a period of several hours mostily waiting for the batteries to recharge. I returned the DC725 to Home Depot who gave me a full refund with no forms to fill out and no questions asked. HD has a great return policy! I replaced the DC725 with a Milwaukee M12 (2404-20) hammer drill and was able to complete drilling the remaining seven holes in about an hour and requiring only one recharge of one of its batteries. There was a noticeable difference in the "hammer" aspect of the DC725 and the M12. The M12 has a much more aggressive hammer action. See my review of the M12 model 2404-20. I think the lithium-ion batteries of the M12 are worth the additional cost of the M12. I, also, was surprised that the 12 volt Milwaukee performed so much better than the 18 vollt DC725 in the hammer operation. I suspect the DC725 will perform well and its battery charge will last longer under average homeowner use drilling holes in wood, driving screws, and drilling more porous mortar with smaller diameter drill bits but I can't recommend it for any project involving drilling significant holes in concrete.

Pros Durable, Easy to Use, Powerful, Sturdy Cons Too Heavy, nicad batteries/short charge under max torque, 4.9 lbs
