Before choosing this paint I looked through consumer reviews of this paint against others. I was surprised to learn that this is not the highest regarded paint. There are comments from amateurs and professionals regarding the quality of this product. Although I take reviews seriously, the colours I'd chosen were in the Ultra range and I decided to take my chances.
I used this paint on freshly primed drywall, and went for a dark, coffee colour, as an accent. I was expecting to have to give it a couple of coats and to work it in to get a consistent opacity against the white and less than perfect primed surface.
The first thing I noticed about the Ultra, is how thick it is. At first I thought this was going to present problems but in fact it cuts down drips and splatter, although it does take a bit of effort to charge up rollers for the first time.
The paint does take some working in. But I just completed a major accent wall and went around to 'touch up' in the usual fashion. Not only are there no patches where the paint appears thin, there is also no indication of excessive paint application.
I bought 2 gallons and 1 would have been enough. Certainly one coat is all that's required, and I'm being pedantic in patching over the lighter areas, as there are none. Just pin head size spots where the paint didn't quite spread.
One thing to note is that I have been using a 1000 watt spot light which has made a huge difference to the finish, and also helps the paint dry quicker. As this has a slight gloss to it, I've been angling the light about 45 degrees on the wall.
I'm very pleased that I took my chances with this paint. I did paint a scrap of drywall which is unprimed, with this ultra paint. This did not work out well and I would have been disappointed with the final finish. But the primed surfaces don't need to be great, and only one coat of this is enough. The dry appearance is wonderful and the eggshell is about right in terms of glossiness.
