      Store SKU:

The Oatey 8 oz. All-Purpose Leak Detector is designed to form large bubbles to indicate even the smallest leaks in many types of piping applications. Detects leaks quickly on all types of tubing, valves, cylinders, pressure tanks or other systems under air, gas or oxygen pressure. Functions in -55 Degree F to 160 Degree F temperature range, making it great for refrigeration lines. Leak detectors are formulated to be used on the specific materials used in plumbing and won't corrode or degrade the pipe if you don't wipe the solution off after checking for leaks. The surfactants and builders in soaps can leave a corrosive residue on the pipe after you're done checking for leaks. This can cause discoloration and in rare occasions small pinhole leaks depending on the temperature and the material being run through the pipes.

      • High-viscosity formula clings to vertical surfaces
      • Designed for use with all types of tubing, valves, cylinders, pressure tanks and other systems under air, gas and oxygen pressure
      • Can be used in a temperature range from 55 Degrees F to 160 Degrees F
      • Produces large, long-lasting bubbles to indicate leaks
      • Slow evaporation rate provides long inspection times for leak detection
      • Non-toxic

I think we all understand that we can mix a little dish soap and water to use as a substitute for this product. What mystifies me is why, given this widely known option, folks complain that there is no dramatic difference using this product. Did anyone really think that there would be? I've just returned from buying a bottle of this product from Home Depot (and yes, I had already read the reviews here). Oatey makes some specific claims for the product: non-corrosive, little or no residue, viability over a specific temperature range, an (implied) reduced evaporation rate, and compatibility with a range of piping and gases. Not all of these necessarily differentiate it from dish soap/H2O, children's bubble liquid, etc.,. True or not, some of these claims could be hard to validate outside of a laboratory. I was motivated to purchase this product for a entirely different reason. Convenience. I have neither the time nor inclination to go play at kitchen chemistry every time I need to check a leak. I can toss this in my tool kit, and when I need it, it is there. I hope that the corrosion and residue claims are correct. They would be a plus. But the time I would spend interrupting my troubleshooting process and mixing my own is worth more than the $4.50 I paid at my local Home Depot. If you don't agree, don't buy it. But don't buy it knowing it is a high priced bottle of fancy bubbles, and then complain about it like it ate a hole through the floor and killed the cat. Silly. Whining. It works. It is no doubt very profitable. It will not restore your thinning hair or attract the opposite gender. Deal with it.

Pros Easy to Install, No Leaks, Reliable, Convenient, neat plastic bubble wand for when you are through Cons does not make you better looking
