      • Poor design prone to failure due to plastic rather than metal on stopper
      • July 25, 2012

I have 6 automatic valves. Two are 10 to 15 year old other brand valves and still work. The other 4 were Orbits like this, maybe 5 to 7 years old. Had to replace two of them with these as the diaphragms were failing and the repair part was not available separately. One new one failed almost immediately and was soon enough to swap for a replacement. Think it was 3 or 4 days after I bought it. One of the two failed today, just short of 10 months later. The part that has failed each time is the Seal Retainer Sub-Assembly at the bottom that connects to the shaft. Basically the stopper at the bottom. The stopper itself is very hard so seems fine, but the shaft is threaded in plastic, not metal so the stopper comes loose and the sprinkler will just run. Not only are the threads plastic, but also somewhat tapered so it is like a slight v shape. Seems like it would be better if it was not tapered but straight parallel with the shaft like a bolt thread, and also metal. When the original failed, I tried putting the retainer back on and re-installing, but it failed again, so I tried putting it on tighter and just when it seemed like it is getting to about the right tightness it just popped off. Didn't mess up the threads, just was too much pressure. Again it is because the threads are plastic and tapered. If it was at least straight I don't think it would pop off, or maybe just threaded a longer way. Both times it failed it was hours later before I noticed, at which point untold gallons of water were lost down the street, after the yard flooded. Not even sure it is worth warranty replacing as the time to install this again and cost in lost water is not something I want to go through again in a year or a week depending on how long it lasts. If it failed in the evening or if no one was home for a day or two, a huge amount of water would be lost. I'm going to look for another brand.
