Q:I need to attach s 14/3 Medium-Duty Replacement Cord with a thickness of .362. How tight does the connector hold the cord if pulled on? Is the cord secured only by the wire caps inside the box?

Answer This Question

A:  I too used these for a 14/3 medium duty replacement cord and the tightness of the connector was OK, but not terrific. In my application I didn't need a super tight fit because it was just a cord running around the room which will likely not get too much strain on it.

A:  This part -- Halex 21692 -- is designed to grip cable between 0.400" and 0.500", so it is too large for your 14/3. You want the similar connector, Halex 21691, which is designed for 0.300" to 0.375".

A:  The cord is held by a rubber grommet within the exterior connector nut. The wire nuts used would be the only method holding the cord within the box unless you: 1) tie a knot in the cord inside the box to prevent cord movement or 2) use some type of cord clamp inside the box to prevent cord movement. This type of box connector is best used in an inaccessible location to prevent tampering and is not use to hang weight by the cord. I hope this answer will help with your project.

Q:At the cord end of the connector, why it printed with 3/4" instead of the cord size 1/2"?

    Answer This Question

A:  Because the box connector will fit 3/4" holes in the electrical outlet box.

A:  It’s a stock image. We use the same image for all sizes of the part in that part family.

Q:My project requires a 7-conductor RV cable passing through a 1/2" thick bulkhead. Are the threads on this one long enough?

      Answer This Question

A:  No, the threads on the connector are not long enough to pass through 1/2'" thick wall. It connector is made for connection to an outlet box. Perhaps, you could attach a box on the outside with a short piece of conduit (a nipple) to penetrate the wall and another box on the inside of the wall. I hope this will assist with your project.

A:  Used on 14/3 conductor rubber jacketed .don't forget to add some lube to cable when you pull it through the rubber grommet. Wire ease / little Vaseline, just a little and the wire will slide right through and keep the rubber grommet from sticking.....

A:  This is Halex product 21692. The mfg does not cite diameters, only cord types. You cannot tell for sure based on diameter. Approved cord types are S, SO, ST, SJ, SJO, and SJT. The different cord type have different diameters based on number and size of conductors, which complicate things. The #16-3 type S is 0.39" to 0.43" diameter, for example. SOOW #12-4 diameter is 0.64" to 0.71". The ID of the threaded part is about 0.75", so this fitting is probably too small for your cord.

Nice and easy to apply but waterproofing is not good for direct burial romex outer coating due to it not being round.
